Spring is the season of new beginnings—fresh blooms, warmer days, and the perfect time for updated family portraits. As a photographer who has worked with hundreds of families, I know one of the most common questions clients ask is: “What should we wear for our spring photos?”
So here’s a guide to help you pick the perfect outfits that not only look amazing in photos but also reflect your family’s personality and vibe.

1. Start with a Color Palette, Not an Exact Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same exact outfit. Instead, aim for coordinating colors. Think soft, muted spring tones—like sage green, dusty rose, pale blue, soft cream, or even a buttery yellow. These colors complement the season beautifully and photograph like a dream.
Pick 2–3 base colors and build from there. For example:
- Sage green + white + tan
- Blush pink + denim + ivory
- Soft blue + cream + khaki
Start with one outfit (usually Mom’s dress or top) and build everyone else’s look around it.
2. Consider the Setting
Think about where your photos will be taken. A garden session may call for lighter, more whimsical outfits, while a field or open meadow may look gorgeous with natural textures like linen, denim, and cotton. If your session is in-studio, go for clean lines and timeless tones that highlight your faces and connections.
3. Mix Textures and Layers
Photos are all about depth. Texture (like lace, knits, gauze, and linen) and layers (like vests, light cardigans, or flowy wraps) help create visual interest without overwhelming the image. Don’t be afraid to mix textures between family members to add variety.

4. Keep Prints Simple
Florals and subtle patterns are totally fine—in fact, they’re lovely in spring! Just keep them minimal and stick to one or two family members wearing a print. This keeps the look cohesive and avoids the photo feeling too busy.
5. Dress for Comfort (and Movement)
Spring sessions often involve a little walking, sitting in the grass, or snuggling close. Make sure everyone’s comfortable. Kids should be able to move, and parents shouldn’t be tugging or adjusting constantly. Choose shoes you can walk in and clothes that allow you to relax and be in the moment.
6. Add a Little Personality
Do your kids love hats? Is your toddler obsessed with her rain boots? That’s okay—if it feels like you, it deserves a spot in your photos. Bring along a meaningful accessory or let a little personality peek through. It’s what makes the session feel like your family, not just any family.
7. Ask Your Photographer for Help
Most photographers (myself included) offer wardrobe consultations or a client closet for spring sessions. Use that resource! We know what photographs well and can help you pull together looks that are effortless and beautiful.
